Federal Grants (Pell + FSEOG)
Federal Pell Grant
The largest federal student aid program, Pell, is the foundation for which all financial aid - federal and state government and non-government sources, is determined.
Students are allowed the equivalent of 12 full time semesters of Pell. Students who enroll part-time have additional semesters of eligibility.
Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) - All students are required to complete a FAFSA.
Verification of Student Financial Aid Data
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOG)
FSEOG is awarded to independent students who are determined, by their FAFSA application, to have the highest financial need. Awards do not require repayment. Funds are limited and dispersed on a first-come, first-served basis.
State Grants (TAP)
Tuition Assistance Program (TAP)
TAP is a grant program for NYS residents, including active duty soldiers and their family members stationed at Fort Drum. Undergraduate students are eligible for a maximum of 8 semesters of TAP; up to 6 can be used at a community college. TAP awards cannot exceed the cost of college tuition.
To apply, students must first submit their FAFSA and then TAP application.
Part‑Time Tuition Assistance Program
The Part‑Time Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) is a grant for students enrolled part‑time (i.e., taking fewer than 12 credits, but at least 3 credits) in an approved undergraduate program. It is pro-rated based on credit load.
To apply, students must first submit their FAFSA and then TAP application.
Important information regarding eligibility for classes shorter than full term:
“Fast track” courses meet for a different period of time than a full term (15 weeks/ 100 days semester;
ten weeks trimester/quarter). They may start and end before or after the regular semester
and run for different lengths of time. Some colleges refer to such courses as “late
start” or “short term” courses.
To meet full-time or part-time study requirements for State-administered financial aid programs (e.g., TAP) purposes, a student who takes fast track courses must carry at least one course that meets for the full 15 weeks/100 days in a semester or ten weeks in a quarter/trimester (inclusive of examination periods) to satisfy the durational requirement on full-time and part-time study in the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education.
During the regular academic program, fast-track courses cannot be combined to meet the 15-week requirement without the required one course that is 15 weeks/100 days. Summer accelerated study allows for summer sessions to be combined as long as the full length of the term meets with the institution’s term type (e.g., a semester-based institution must have summer sessions that, when combined, equal 15 weeks/100 days).
If the fast-track courses all begin at the start of a semester, students can be certified as full-time as soon as they have a full tuition liability. If the fast-track courses begin later than the regular semester, certification cannot take place until the student achieves full-time status, that is, when the student’s course load is at least 12 credits.
The basic requirement for fast-track courses is the demonstration of enrollment for a full-time course load, either by registering for at least 12 credits to be undertaken during the semester or prefiling a plan of study for enrollment in at least 12 credits. The student cannot add fast track courses at a later date during the semester to achieve a full-time course load.
